How to shoot headshot photography

Updated: Oct 17

A good headshot photographer intuitively knows how to help you find the pose that best accentuates your features and will use lighting and a neutral background to create the perfect image. To get a standout headshot, you should look directly at the camera with a calm, confident expression.

1) What is headshot photography?

Headshot photography aims to capture a carefully staged photograph of a person’s head and upper body to be used for professional purposes. A headshot photo serves as an instantly recognizable representation of that person in corporate brochures, social media profiles, press releases, resumes, and other publications.

Getting a good headshot, however, is not as simple as you might think! The photo must be thoughtfully curated to ensure it meets its intended purpose and tone—whether formal and businesslike or casual and friendly. Its size and framing are also key to ensuring it meets industry standards for specific publications and online sites.

2) What makes a bad headshot?

Poor lighting can ruin a headshot. Harsh lighting casts shadows, while dim lighting fails to illuminate the face. Forced expressions, inappropriate attire, and a cluttered background can also detract from the quality of your headshots.

In our fast-paced world, first impressions are everything. No matter how talented and hardworking you are, a bad headshot can cause you to be overlooked for the opportunities you deserve. To get a sense of the type of headshot you need, look at the profiles of the top talent in your industry or area of expertise for inspiration.

3) How to shoot headshot photography

At your headshot photo session, you should look directly at the camera with a natural, relaxed facial expression. Soft lighting will be used to highlight your face—the focal point of the image. You should wear appropriate attire and sit in front of a neutral, uncluttered background.

In our professional photography studio, we believe our clients deserve the very best headshot photo shoot experience. Plus, a calm, relaxed client makes our job a dream! That’s why all of our headshot photography sessions include a pre-shoot consultation that helps ease any nerves and ensures we both understand exactly what you’d like to gain from this experience.
